Zee5, Alt Balaji’s series LSD features a gay doctor character

LGBTQ+ representation in Indian TV has come a long way since the first gay couple appeared in Star Plus serial "Maryada... Lekin Kab Tak?"

Ayush Shrivastava, best known for Kalank and OTT series Abhay 2 is playing a gay doctor in Zee5 and Alt Balaji’s LSD – Love, Scandal & Doctors, reports The Tribune. About the series, Ayush says, “I’m playing Dr Kabir, one of the interns in KMRC Medical Institute. I wanted to do this character because I have never played such a role. This guy is very innocent, pure and gay. The series portrays what all he goes through in life because of his choices.”

“As an artiste, I just wanted to live that life and now I know how it feels. You have to watch the show to know what I am saying. Playing this character, I learnt not to give up even if things are not in your favour”, he adds.

LSD also stars Rahul Dev, Puneet Pathak, Siddharth Menon, Shruthy Menon, Tanaya Sachdeva, and Srishti Rindani. Directed by Saqib Pandor, it premiered on February 5, 2021.

Ayush is an engineering graduate from Bhilai, while his hometown is Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. He is also known for Ishq Subhanallah and 13 Mussorie. Further, he will be seen in Hindi feature film Amar Colony, which was shot in Shimla, directed by Siddharth Chauhan.

While movies like Fire, Aligarh showed strong and positive LGBTQ+ representation it was only after Ayushmann Khurrana starrer Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan that the representation of the community found its way into pop culture and commercial media. Although, the scope of inclusive and sensitive media representation is vast, there are only a few shows on Indian TV and OTT platforms implying the oncoming change.

It's been over a decade since the first gay couple appeared on Indian television. The serial, "Maryada... Lekin Kab Tak?" was launched on Star Plus in October, 2010. It aired just after primetime and lasted for less than a year. We've come a long way since then. Here is a list of some shows/movies release in recent times that we liked—Made in Heaven, Four More Shots, Please!, Ek Ladki Ko Dekha To Aisa Laga, and Romil and Jugal.
