Congress candidate Sandeep Mahant won the local body elections in Punjab, reports The Times of India. Mahant, a trans woman, won Ward 27 of Mansa municipal council, defeating BJP’s Sukhchain Singh by eight votes.
There were just 540 trans person electors in all of Punjab in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls; hence Mahant emerging victorious is a rare feat and a moment of celebration for the trans community.
Sources in the Congress said Mahant could be given a place within the municipal council.
Mahant’s residence was teeming with admirers on Wednesday night. Mahant said “I am feeling very happy by winning in municipal council elections and I would discharge any responsibility with full devotion.
Mansa zila parishad chairman Bikram Mofar, stated, “We feel happy over the victory of Sandeep Mahant. She may be provided some responsibility in the new house to be formed in few days.”
