Actress Monica Dogra Comes Out As Pansexual At Awadh Queer Pride

Actress Monica Dogra on Sunday came out as  Pansexual at the Awadh Queer Pride on Sunday. The actress, who stars in  ALT Balaji's upcoming web series A Married Woman, made the revelation while virtually addressing the Pride parade participants via Zoom.

A Married Woman is a web series based on Manju Kapur's novel of the same name and narrates a love story between two women who rise above the heteronormative social norms to accept their sexuality.

On being asked about her experience playing a bisexual woman, Monica Dogra revealed that this isn't her first time exploring her sexuality on screen. She said that her other works also speak about the themes such as sexuality.

She then added that she personally connects with the character and identifies with the character who falls in love with a woman.

"Personally, I am pansexual. I fall in love with women, I fall in love with men… So, I really identify with this character, deeply… I have a personal connection with this story," she said.

The actress said this was not the first time that she was vocal about her sexuality. "... I have spoken about it (her sexuality) in the press but the press has never written about it really...” added Monica.

The LGBTQI community participating in the fifth edition of the Pride march in Lucknow welcomed the actress' decison to be 'Out and Proud Pansexual'.

"Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity is not a matter to be ashamed of. Self acceptance leads to self love and is a healing process. Monica Dogre's coming out will go a long way to have a healthier and open discussion around sexuality," said Yadavendra Singh, one of the co-founders and organisers of the Awadh Queer Pride.

The web series isn't her first time representing a same-sex relationship on screen. In the video accompanying DJ Nanok's Lay You Down, Monica and singer-actress Anushka Manchand portrayed two women in love with each other.

Monica Dogra is an Indian-American musician and actor. She has worked in six feature films and is a judge on India's first English music talent show, The Stage. She has worked on the Viceland Emmy nominated series Woman produced by Gloria Steinem and was a participant in Khatron Ke Khilari Season 8.
